It is a measure of how high Raiders have raised their own bar that a convincing 37-14 win on the road left them reflective rather than rejoicing on Saturday.

Guernsey director of rugby Jordan Reynolds admitted that in any other year such a result at Old Albanian would have delighted him, but having now won six games from seven, there is perhaps more expectancy in his side now.

‘It is a little bit strange because our standards are higher at the moment than they have been in the past,’ he said.

‘We were coming off a little frustrated about our decision-making and our execution in some areas, which allowed them back into the game, and that is something we have talked about because we want to be able to control those momentum shifts.

‘We performed well in parts, got ourselves a little flustered in others.

‘But we stuck to the task, which was great, piled on five tries in an away game and allowed only two, which makes it a great result for us.

‘It’s another five points against a good side.’

Raiders got off to the ideal start with winger Ethan Smith scoring the opening try within 30 seconds of the kick off.

Josh Poullet touched down for a try converted by Ciaran McGann to increase the lead before 10 minutes had elapsed and Raiders had the platform they wanted.

‘Our first 20 minutes was really solid and credit to the players for that,’ Reynolds said.

‘We have talked about how we started slowly at Havant but then had a fast start at TJs, so to get that type of fast start we wanted on Saturday in fairly wet conditions, which made a huge difference, was pleasing.’

The hosts then got a foothold in the game as they replied with a converted try of their own and enjoyed a good spell before Poullet got his second of the half shortly before the interval to give Guernsey a 17-7 lead at the break.

‘Did we become a little bit complacent after the first two tries? I’m not sure, but OAs did dictate the next period of the game,’ said Reynolds.

Importantly, Raiders got the first try after the turnaround, with Carter Hackett going over and McGann adding the extras.

McGann went on to kick a couple of penalties to keep the hosts, who had scored a second try on 53min., at arm's length before going over for his side fifth and final try himself late on.

Reynolds was quick to praise those at the ‘coalface’ for their contribution to the victory.

‘Our front row were excellent again. That has been a common theme for us this season where our scrum has really helped us engage in games and get on the front foot.’
