President of Guernsey Rugby Club, Ady Le Page MBE, is heading up a social media campaign and www.giving.gg Raiders’ fundraiser appeal aimed to offer Guernsey’s rugby community the opportunity to raise funds to help it as it prepares for the 2021/22 season.
The Centenary Siam Cup Match is planned to be held in Guernsey on 28th August 2021 and promises to be a fantastic sporting occasion. Donations greater than or equal to £120 will be entitled to receive either a memorial Centenary Siam shirt or the 2021/22 league shirt, with all donors’ names printed subliminally on the shirt.
As with a lot of companies, charities, clubs and individuals, the rugby community has been hit very hard financially as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has been compounded by the RFU withdrawing their funding to support to rugby clubs travelling to and from the island. As the senior rugby club on the Island of Guernsey the Raiders have been nominated to promote this donation initiative to raise funds to support rugby in Guernsey. The funds raised will be used to support all avenues of rugby on the island including, the Guernsey Rugby Association, the Academy, the Vikings, the Raiders Ladies and men’s squads. There are currently over 550 players (boys, girls, men and women) playing rugby in Guernsey as well as over 1,000 supporters.
Joint-Chair Andrea Harris said, “We have decided to launch this appeal hoping to raise £50,000, after more than a year without home fixtures revenue. We have exhausted all other sources of available sponsorship and funding for next season before taking this step. Raider’s face a financial mountain to fund all our obligations to island rugby teams next season. The 2021/22 season promises a return to the new normal, meaning away fixtures in National 2 for the men, National Challenge 1 for ladies, the Zoo League Div 2 for the St Jacques Vikings and the Academy RFU Leagues. The RFU have been unable to confirm our travel grant funding due to its own loss of revenues from home fixtures at Twickenham this season.”
Joint-Chair Charlie McHugh said, “This is a unique opportunity to have your name put on a Centenary Siam Cup Guernsey shirt. This offer allows supporters to show their financial backing for Guernsey rugby and at the same time to acquire a unique collectors’ piece of sporting memorabilia”
The Siam Centenary shirts are a high quality item made by ‘Guilbert’ and will feature a centenary logo and the swirls in the green stripes that are part of the design of the actual Cup.
To enable you to show your support on Siam Cup day, orders must be placed no later than the 12th of June 2021, the 2021/22 League shirts must be ordered before 1st August 2021. Orders can be placed via the the giving.gg website, Raiders’ fundraiser page https://giving.gg/donate/event/7002/Raiders--Fundraiser.
Ady Le Page said “big thank you to all our players and fans for your on-going generous support of Guernsey rugby. All donation of any amount on our giving.gg page will help sustain island rugby at one of the most difficult times in its history”.
