JONES RETURNS FOR ‘IRISH’ GAME
IT’S so easy to be fooled by the National 2 South league table this season.
Saturday’s visitors to Footes Lane may sit bottom with only two wins, but compared to many in the division they are a form side with two wins in their last four.
Those two victories came at the end of last month when, after a win-less start to the campaign, they finally got off the mark with a 33-28 win at home to Redruth.
Suitably boosted they then went to Clifton the following Saturday and won again.
For those not familiar with the ‘Geese’, who we encountered back in our London & SE Premier days, Wild Geese is the playing name of London Irish Amateur Rugby Club which was founded in 1999 just over 100 years after its parent club, which was launched in 1898.
They use the training facilities owned by London Irish at Hazelwood Drive, Sunbury-on-Thames but are not linked with them in playing terms.
Five points separate us and the Geese, the difference lying with bonus points accrued.
Jordan Reynolds, the Raiders coach, has stressed the need to pick up ‘bonuses’ all season long, but having failed to secure anything last week at Old Redcliffians a full-house would be welcome this weekend.
In team news, going into Thursday’s final training session, several Raiders were in need of fitness tests, which saw Luke Sayer (haematoma) and Harry Baron (groin) ruled out. Both Robin Le Cocq and Dale Martin definitely remain out for a few more weeks.
One player who did pass was Luke Jones, who will be donning the 13 shirt for the first time since the pre-season match against the Doncaster Phoenix back in August. He will be joined in the starting line up by Malcolm Barnes who gets the nod at scrum half and by Dave Anderson at prop who both put in a solid effort last week off the bench.
As for the opposition, Reynolds recognises that of the two opposing sides in front of the Garenne Stand, Wild Geese are the side in form.
‘There are still some familiar faces in their lineup from when we last played three or four years ago,’ he recalls.
‘We haven’t won any of our last five but I don’t think we are too far off achieving that win.’
Kick off is 2pm Saturday 24th November. Free entry for members and under 16. £9 entry for non-members.
